Fort Riley Commanding General's Mounted Color Guards

Image-empty-state_edited_edited_edited_e

The Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard, established in 1992, preserves Fort Riley’s cavalry heritage by portraying the U.S. Cavalry as it appeared in the mid‑to‑late 19th century. Outfitted in authentic Civil War–era uniforms and equipment, these soldiers—selected from units across Fort Riley—train in traditional cavalry manuals to recreate the skill, precision, and pageantry of the American Horse Soldier. The unit performs mounted drills, weapons demonstrations, and ceremonial appearances at rodeos, parades, community events, and military functions, showcasing expert horsemanship with period arms such as the 1861 Cavalry Light Saber, .45‑caliber revolver, and 1873 Remington lever‑action rifle. Representing both Fort Riley and the U.S. Army, the Mounted Color Guard offers a highly professional and historically rich display of military tradition.
